But this year, Spinlight Studio walked away with two, earning the respect of a foundation that’s been setting the standard for children’s media for almost 35 years, and cementing its place among the world’s top educational app developers.
As a kid, Spinlight partner and creative director Matt Hutton remembers seeing the Parents’ Choice award on games and books in the family cupboard. As a parent, the mark has become even more meaningful, guiding he and his wife Candace towards quality educational experiences for their two sons. But it wasn’t until this week that Hutton would see the same trusted hallmark leading other parents to his company door.
On Thursday, the awards were announced, with Spinlight earning not one, but two Parents’ Choice distinctions for two of its biggest sellers — Operation Math and AlphaTots. “It’s kind of surreal,” says Hutton. “They’ve been a brand longer than we’ve been a company. So it’s strange that we’ve created something that’s earned this prestigious honor.”
In many ways, the big announcement was the icing on the cake for Spinlight, which only began producing apps for the iOS in January of 2011 and has already seen six titles chart on 13 Top 100 lists in nearly 60 countries around the globe.
“Just last week, Apple plugged Operation Math on the main page of the iTunes store in Sweden,” says Hutton. “So that tells you how much app development has been a game changer for us.”
“Before the iPad, we were a regional company. We were an advertising agency with national clients and national awards, but there weren’t really too many people who knew about us outside of Illinois. Now, we’re getting interest from all points on the globe. And today’s announcement should only help elevate our profile.”
What’s next for the Spinlight team? According to Hutton, new apps are already in the works. “We’ve spent a fair amount of time this year updating our existing apps and moving several titles to the Android platform, but we definitely have some great apps on tap.” As for the details, Hutton says we’ll simply have to stay tuned.
